Swapping a like-for-like light fitting, changing a worn socket face, or replacing a faulty switch is within reach of a careful homeowner: power off at the breaker, test that it’s dead, photograph the wiring before you touch it, and connect like for like.
Here’s where the line sits. Anything involving the breaker panel itself, adding new circuits or outlets, wiring that doesn’t match what you expected to find, or any sign of scorching, buzzing, or warmth at a socket — stop and get it looked at. Aluminum wiring (common in late-1960s and 1970s builds) also changes the rules and wants specific connectors.
And bathrooms and kitchens near water are never the place to learn by trial.
