Winter is rough on a house, and most of the damage is quiet. Walk through this list on a dry weekend and you’ll catch small problems while they’re still cheap:
- ☐ Look at ceilings and top-floor corners for new water stains — the roof may have leaked silently.
- ☐ Run every faucet and check under each sink for slow drips.
- ☐ Check caulk around tubs, showers, and sinks; cracked caulk lets water into walls.
- ☐ Test the sump pump (if you have one) before spring rain season.
- ☐ Open windows shut all winter — sticking frames and torn screens show up now.
- ☐ Turn an outdoor faucet on slowly; a pipe that froze can split and only leak when reopened.
- ☐ Look at deck boards, steps, and railings for winter splits and loose fixings.
- ☐ Swap HVAC filters and note the date.
