Door Sticking or Rubbing? Humidity or Hinges — Here’s How to Tell

A door that suddenly sticks isn’t always a door problem. In a New York summer, wood swells with humidity and a door that was fine in January rubs in August. That kind usually frees up again in winter and just needs patience — or a light plane on the rubbing edge.

Hinge trouble looks different: the gap is uneven, wider at the bottom than the top, or the door sags toward the handle side. Check the top hinge screws first — they carry the weight and work loose over years. A stripped screw hole can be packed with matchsticks and wood glue, left to set, and re-screwed.

If neither fits — the frame itself may have shifted — that’s worth a look in person. CMG Bridge, Staten Island, Monday to Saturday. $125 covers the first hour and travel within 10 miles.
