Fewer Falls at Home: Small Upgrades That Help Parents Age in Place

Most falls at home happen in the same few places, and small changes cover them well. In the bathroom — the highest-risk room — properly anchored grab bars by the bath, shower, and toilet matter more than any gadget. They must be fixed into studs or with rated anchors; a suction bar is not a grab bar. Add a non-slip mat or strips in the tub, and raise the toilet seat if sitting down has become a negotiation.

On the stairs and along the hallway: a second handrail where there’s only one, and low night lights or motion-sensor lights on the route from bedroom to bathroom. Clear the walkway clutter — cords across floors, loose rugs (tape them down or lift them), and shoes by the door.

In the kitchen, moving everyday items from high shelves to between-waist-and-shoulder height ends most climbing on stools.

Fitting grab bars and rails into studwork is exactly our kind of work: CMG Bridge, Staten Island, $125 covers the first hour.
