A garage door that groans, jerks, or reverses for no reason is asking for attention. Safe checks first, with the door closed: look at the rollers and hinges for cracked wheels or loose fixings, and clear anything from the sensor eyes near the floor — misaligned or dirty sensors cause most mystery reversals. Lubricate rollers, hinges, and tracks with a garage-door lubricant, not heavy grease, which collects grit.
Test the balance: disconnect the opener (red cord) and lift the door halfway by hand. It should stay roughly where you leave it. A door that slams down or shoots up needs spring adjustment.
Stop there. The torsion springs and cables hold enough tension to cause serious injury, and they are never a DIY item — no exceptions. If the balance is off or a spring is broken, call it in.
For the hinges, rollers, and hardware side of the job, CMG Bridge works across Staten Island, Monday to Saturday.
